Endometriosis is a very common health issue for women. For women suffering from this condition the tissue that appears and functions as if it is the lining of the uterus is found growing outwards from the uterus and in various other places.

These are known as cancers, tumors or implants, or nodules. It allows collaboration and information sharing among women suffering from endometriosis. Endometriosis is thought to affect more than one million women (estimates vary between 3% and 18 percent in the women).

It is among the most common cause of pain in the pelvis as well as causes of laparoscopic surgery and the hysterectomy procedure. Although the average age at diagnosis is between 25 and 30 years old, the condition has been discovered at a young age, in girls at just 11 years old.

It is uncommon among postmenopausal women. Endometrial cells (loosened in the menstrual cycle) could "back upwards" into the fallopian tubes to the pelvis, from where they form and expand in the abdominal or pelvic cavities. This is called retrograde menstruation.
